Service Entry
Main Distribution Panel
Branch Circuits
The electric service between the street and the main distribution panel are evaluated. The configuration and condition of hte service entry cable are checked as well as the house connection and meter pan. The type of service entry conductor is determined and the type of power is established.
The main distribution panel is the distribution center for electric service within the building and protects the house wiring from overloads. The following areas are inspected: Condition and location of panel board, Amperage rating, Voltage rating, Grounding, and Over current protection.
The oldest types of residential wiring systems are seldom encountered today. They include open wires on metal cleats, wrapped wire on ceramic posts, wiring laid directly in plaster, and wiring in wooden molding. These systems were proved to be quite hazardous. The following conditions are evaluated: Connected loads, Grounding, Condition and safety of exposed circuits, and the absence or presence of aluminum wiring and the absence or presence of copper "tailing" of aluminum circuits;
Tailing is the provision for copper conductors or "tails" to be affixed to the ends of the aluminum circuits
